Welcome to The Rich Outdoors and our 270th episode. Pretty special guest on the show today and one that I have grown up looking up to for most of my life. I think there are a lot of people in my era that has grown up watching Shockey and following along on his adventures. Jim Shockey probably as much as anyone opened my eyes to a world far bigger than I ever knew. He introduced me to what was possible, and for a lot of reasons inspired me to think bigger. I am really honored to have Jim on the show, and just hope I did this interview justice. On a lot of levels, there was just so many questions that I want to ask for my own personal interests and my own journey. EP 237: Mental Toughness and Becoming MTN Tough

Today I am joined by Dustin Diefenderfer of right here in Bozeman Montana. Born and raised in Montana Dustin is a beast on the mountain and loves to push the limits. I met Dustin through the MTN Tough Course here in Bozeman and got the chance to test it out over the last couple months. You have probably heard the ads for this course on the podcast and Dustin is the man behind the scene for the MTN Tough program.
In this episode, Dustin and I dive into the mental toughness aspect of being a backcountry hunter. Not only is this one of my favorite pieces of the puzzle but also what I feel is the difference between being good and being great. We also dive into how hunting has such a much larger impact on making you a better human than is often talked about. Dustin is one of those guys who pushes the group and is always leading both mentally and physically. I really love this episode and believe this is one of the most underrated aspects to any backcountry hunt.

What’s up girls and boys! You know what time it is, it is Wapiti Wednesday time! Which also means that elk season is fast approaching, or at least we can officially start counting down the days. What better way to get Wapiti Wednesday kicked off for 2018 than to have on a couple of true elkoholics. In this episode of Wapiti Wednesday, I am joined by good friends Andrew Whitney and Pete Muennich. Both of them are Montana transplants that didn’t find out they were obsessed with elk hunting until they got to Montana. We start the episode off with their laughable attempts and chasing bulls in the early years. We talk about the highs and lows as well as they’re an impressive learning curve and some of the tactics they developed along the way. Pete and Andrew have really grown in the last decade and were fortunate enough to have a banner year in 2017 harvest bulls each as well as helping buddies punch their tags as well.
