Ep 076: Comparing Pack Animals For Backcountry Hunting

August 18, 2016 by Cody Rich

Pack-animals-hunting-podcast
Welcome to the podcast we have an awesome show for you today this episode is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I have always wanted to sit down and compare various pack animals and see what the pros and cons are. Originally I planned to make this three, 20 minute sections but there are just too many interesting questions to shut me up at 20 minutes, so this ended up being kind of a long podcast. I think over all this is a great resources to get started with when weighing some of the options for using pack animals. There is still a ton of information that did not get added and I still want to dive into some more pack topics in future episodes.

To kick this episode off we are chatting with our good friend Ms. Rachel Ahtila who was on the podcast back in Episode 48, so if you want to know Rachel a little better be sure to go back and check out that episode as well. Rachel is a sheep guide in Canada and has a ton of experience with horses in the backcountry. One thing to note, and I believe we talk about this, is that the needs for horses in the backcountry up there are far different than the average bow or rifle hunter in the lower 48 just looking to access more country or for getting meat out. Still overall some great info and some great insight into some of the advantages and limitations of using stock.
In the second bit Rachel joins me on the call with Beau Baty, of Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas to chat about using lamas to access the backcountry. One interesting things is that Beau comes from a 4th generation outfitter and was raised using nothing but horses and mules but now finds that llamas meet his needs the best. To wrap of our packing episode, fellow podcaster and avid goat packer Marc Warnke of Outdoors International and gothunts.com  joins me for a super interesting talk all pack goats. I hope you guys enjoy this episode.
