EP 416: Logan Summers – Livin in Trucks and Killin Big Bucks

January 9, 2020 by Cody Rich

Welcome to the podcast, today Logan Summers drops by the studio for some cowboy super-mosa’s and chat about big bucks. Logan is my kind of guy, and I love that when he was trying to make a carrier in the hunting industry he would come to Bozeman and sleep out of his truck. Logan has that mindset that so many successful people carry of just always giving 51% and be willing to do whatever it takes. You could say Logan started his carrier in the deep end of the pool, following one of the most hardcore backcountry hunters in the industry. We talk a fair amount about how he got his foot in the door and his journey as a photographer.

As a hunter Logan has also carved out his own niche of skills and has figured out something not many else have. Logan has found a knack for finding big bucks on chunks of ground most people drive right by. This year Logan killed a giant whitetail and access cost him merely a case of Keystone.

Today’s Podcast brought to you by On X and goHUNT. Its tag season right now and if you aren’t familiar with that term it basically means now is the time of year hardcore hunters are figuring out our fall plans. Some of us obsess over this kind of stuff, but it’s for good reason. For me, this is the most important time spent. There is nothing worse than spending a week hunting only to hike your face off and only see one or two animals. Yes, hunting is about more than the kill but I will take a hunt where I get to see more wildlife than other hunters any day of the week. This year I probably had one of my best years to date and I attribute that to the planning and preparation done this time of year. I can’t stress it enough if you want to be more successful in having the right tag in your pocket is one of the biggest keys.
Having said all of that, when I jump on the computer to find the next hunt the two websites I log into are goHUNT.com and Onxmaps.com. This time of year it’s pretty much daily and in fact, Jaden and I have to regulate ourselves in the office because that’s a rabbit hole we may not come out of for the rest of the day.
GoHUNT.com’s filtering tool allows me to browse and scan for hunts, dive into the numbers, and is full of amazing data to help me analyze the numbers. I am constantly looking for that balance great hunt while making sure I can actually draw tags. As I find units in goHUNT the next thing I do is switch over to my On X account and start to analyze that unit from the perspective of a map. Can I get away from people? Is there enough public land? Does the terrain look like the kind of hunt I want? It is a constant back and forth between ON X and goHUNT. If you are new to these platforms I promise you the more you play with them the better you get. I have often said that I personally don’t think I can see the answer until I have starred at the problem long enough to see what everyone else doesn’t. I know some of the best hunters in the world and the large majority of them use these tools in much the same way and with much the same mindset.
If you want to have your best year yet. Don’t just get both of these tools, become proficient at using them. Use the promo code TRO for both your ON X and goHUNT memberships and you will not only save money but help support this podcast as well.
