EP 415: Mule Deer Biology Series – Wyoming

January 6, 2020 by Jaden Bales

Hey guys! This is Jaden Bales from the Rich Outdoors. 2020 is the “Year of the Deer” for me, so you can expect a bit more coming from me in the future as I document how I’m trying to take my deer hunting skills to the next level this year. I wanted to kick off the Year of the Deer by getting biologists on from different states to better understand how mule deer are managed across the west. The hope is this can help me, and the rest of the listeners, better understand harvest states, mule deer populations, and hopefully make the right application choices this spring.

To kick off the series, I wanted to have on my good friend from Wyoming, Lee Knox. Lee and I became close when I lived down in Laramie and often times would ourselves deep in conversations about some of the data he’s gathering regarding mule deer age classes, antler sizes, the research that’s out about CWD, and much more. Without making too bold of claims, he does a good job at pointing to the best information managers in Wyoming have available that’s helped them make their management decisions. Importantly, he also covers how mule deer are managed in the public trust and how public input plays an important role in how seasons, and ultimately deer are managed in various regions around Wyoming.

We talk about the differences in what it means to be a 201 elk hunter in comparison to a 201 deer hunter. There are some major differences but also some similarities.

EP 320: South Cox

January 31, 2019 by Cody Rich

Not only is South Cox one of my favorite storytellers but he is such an amazing hunter that he has so much to share. One of the best in the business, in my opinion, I always enjoy having South Cox of Stalker Stick Bows on the podcast. South is renowned for being a high country Mule deer guy with a trad bow so it was really cool this year to see him head after screaming bulls and get it done at less than 5 yards. In this episode we a lot and tend to bounce around to some interesting topics, but South shares some of the struggles he encountered on his elk hunt as well as one of the coolest stories I have heard all year as he ended up arrowing his bull at feet, not yards. We also chat about knowing when to be aggressive and when to be patient. This might be South’s most valuable skill as he does this seemingly flawlessly. Even as he recounts his Nevada Mule Deer harvest this year, he amazes me with knowing just what to do at the right moment. We also talk about the struggles of more and more people in the backcountry and how South deals with pressure in places there never has been in years past. A great episode and one I highly recommend. Do me a favor and be sure to follow @stalkerstickbows on Instagram and be sure to check the Full Draw Film Tour Schedule for a show near you to go check out South’s Elk Hunt on the big screen.

EP 318: Brad Brooks Backpack Hunting and Gear

January 24, 2019 by Cody Rich

Welcome to the podcast! In today’s episode, I am joined by my buddy Brad Brooks who somehow has not been on the podcast in over 300 episodes. Brad is the owner of Argali Outdoors and has created some great film and is also a hardcore backpack hunter and gearhead. Time flew by in this episode and we never even got to half of the stuff we wanted to talk about. In fact, Brad and I were talking and we’ll probably end up doing a part two to this podcast. In this podcast, we talk a bit about entrepreneurship, as Brad is a fellow entrepreneur and the struggles of the balancing work and hunting. We also cover a lot of tips on backpack hunting both in early season as well as late. This season Brad, Ryan Callaghan, and a couple buddies joined in on a pretty epic backcountry mule deer hunt in Idaho that ended up being in the single-digit temperatures.  We talk about what backpack trips in those temps look like in comparison to early season and some tips for packing necessary items.

Also big thank you to all of you who have supported the podcast on Patreon, I can’t thank you guys enough. We have a long ways to go but I think we are going to be able to do some really cool things over there. If you haven’t yet, go check out our Patreon page and sign up if you want a chance at winning a new stone glacier 40/56 pack. We will be drawing at the end of the month, so get your name in the hat if you want to win.

Hope you enjoy this episode and if you have more questions on gear for Brad, please leave a comment and we can cover those in part 2

If you don’t have the On X app, well, I guess you just don’t know what your missing. OnXmaps.com or available at in your favorite app store.

MTNTOUGH Fitness Lab located in Bozeman, MT, has established itself as the elite source for improving mental toughness, physical preparation, and performance research for the backcountry hunter. I personally tested their pre-season Backcountry Hunter program here in Bozeman, with Dustin Diefenderfer, the founder of MTNTOUGH and I loved it. It is a great workout that will test you and push you to the limits physically and mentally.
Their online programs are 90-days, all video based, and is delivered through the private MTNTOUGH site that is accessible on any device.  Think of it as a private social training platform specifically built for Backcountry Hunters. They now have a 90-day online program for pre-season, and a brand new 90 day online program for post-season. The post-season program is specifically built to pack strength back on to a hunter after a long season in the field and will be available Jan 1. An ideal winter program to capitalize on all the work you have put in this hunting season. Make sure to go www.mtntough.com to take a look at these programs and there you will also find a few of their favorite workouts as free downloads, including a no-gear and a heavy pack workout.

EP 302: Muley Monday with Ryan Lampers

. Ryan’s luck comes in the form of a perfect combination of hard work and persistence. In this episode, I try to crack into what makes Ryan so successful hunt after hunt and year after year. With three bomber bucks already in the freezer, this year and one more tag to fill Lampers has the skills to get it done from early season through late. One of the things I have picked up from Ryan is that he can read the lay of map better than most and just knows where to find those big bucks that nobody has messed with.

This episode is brought to you by On X maps. On X is such an awesome tool and 100% a must have. There are so many great features on the onX maps app. First off the OnX Maps works without service. Let me say that again you do not need service to have badass maps right on your phone and the GPS works with no service or in airplane mode. I think so many people are confused by that. Its magic folks it just works. One of the cool ways I have been using my OnX maps this season is that every time I come across a heavy elk trail or cattle trail, I turn on my “Tracker” which basically tracks wherever I go. Then I just follow that trail on my way out and hit save. this records various trails all over the mountain that I can have for later. Now, say next year I get into a screaming bull on that same hillside I can look at my onX and see hey there’s a trail that runs right across this face over to him. It seems like every year I would think to myself, “I know there is a trail around here somewhere” now I have all of that info saved to my phone. Use the TRO promo code when you sign up or even just renew your account and get 20% off. www.onXmaps.com or at your favorite app store.

Hey guys and gals, this is your final warning. I don’t want to hear any whining or complaining that you missed this when it is gone. This is your final opportunity to get try out goHUNT.com Insider for free. The free trial almost over, so if you want to see what everyone is raving about go check it out right now. GoHunt is by far and away one of my favorite tools and a must have in my opinion. I use goHunt religiously year around. From researching units to how to articles to grabbing last minute gear in the gear shop you need to be an Insider member. Do me a favor while the free trial is going on, which is not very long, head over sign up and check out the filtering 2.0 for 5 minutes. there are a ton of features to help you find better units and have more successful hunts. Head over to www.goHunt.com/tro to get your free trial.
