EP 235: Muley Monday with Hjalmar Hedman

June 4, 2018 by Cody Rich

Muley Monday is back! For all of you Muley Freaks who love hearing stories of big muley bucks The Rich Muley Monday segment is right up your alley. To kick off Muley Monday this year I am joined by my buddy Hjalmar Hedman who is originally from Sweden. Hjalmar didn’t really grow up hunting but was a board sports fanatic. When he finally picked up archery and then hunting he became a fanatic and emerged himself if everything he could get his hands on. With zero guidance when getting into hunting, Hjalmar has a pretty epic first hunt story. Following the exact guidance of a book published in 1883, Theodore VanDyke The Still Hunter.  Hjalmar was still hunting the hills outside of L.A. and managed to harvest a buck. With early success, Hjalmar continued to learn and expand his knowledge. In this episode, we dive into his early success but we also talk about his learning curve and not having any hunting mentor to learn from

Today’s podcast brought to you by Solo Targets. Solo Targets are life-sized 2D targets that look ultra-realistic.  I found these guys because I was looking for a standard 2D elk target for my range and these Solo Skins were exactly what I wanted only way cooler. The Elk Target that I got is huge, it is full size and they use an actual high res image of a bull. One thing I love about this target overshooting a dot is that it is very realistic as far as having to choose a spot on an animal to shoot. After getting the elk skin and loving it the guys from Solo Target sent me their full target system which is a stand for your own standard block target which will work with pretty much any block, couple that with one of the skins and you an awesome life-like target. Not only is a Solo Target cheaper than a full 3D target but I love the added pressure of knowing you have to hit the vitals. I can’t say enough good things about goHUNT.com, they continue to add new states and grow their information. If you listen to Tag Tuesday, you need a goHUNT account. That is all there is to it, I use goHUNT religiously and I love the platform. If you fancy yourself a hunter, you need to go sign up for goHUNT and become an insider member. Use the promo code TRO when you sign up and you will automatically get $50 to use in the gear shop.
Today’s episode also brought to you by GoWild App.
GoWild is the Fastest-Growing and Most active app for hunters, anglers, and Outdoors enthusiasts. Thousands of people joining weekly. Most major social media platforms have strict anti-hunting and anti-firearms policies. When you use those apps, they make money in advertising, which they in turn use to expand a platform that doesn’t support hunting. GoWild not only supports hunting but donates revenue back into conservation groups and organizations like Raise Em Outdoors, which is helping teach kids to hunt and fish.
Log time. Earn points. Get bragging rights. GoWild isn’t about your follower count, it’s about your hard-earned GoWild Legend points. Over time the app will be adding functionality to reward users for their time outside, so start logging your points now.

. Big thanks to goHUNT.com for making Tag Tuesday possible. goHUNT and specifically the goHUNT insider membership is more than just a hunting research tool. With the gear shop, equipment testing, and the tag strategy articles it is a one-stop shop for getting you set up for success in western hunting. Even as most of the tags draws have come out and left you without any great draw tags. goHUNT.com will help you find those “hidden gem” over the counter hunts and honestly that’s one of my favorite features about goHUNT. The ability to fill in my season with hunts or units that aren’t well known. If you are on the fence about spending the money for a goHUNT membership let me tell you it is well worth the money. Sign up now with the TRO code and get $50 automatically in your account to spend in the goHUNT Gear Shop.

In Fact, Oregon is one of those states you could research within goHUNT to find a great over the counter tag to fill your season.
Today I am joined by Calvin Halladay of Sheep Mountain Outfitters to talk about Oregon tag application strategy. In this episode, we dive in to my old home state and cover how the point creep in Oregon is affecting certain hunts and how some of those top units are doing. Cal spends as much time as anyone in the many of the top units and has a great heartbeat on the pulse of the top end Bulls, Bucks Sheep and Goats. We cover how to apply as well as who should be applying in Oregon as a non resident, as well as some things to avoid. We also cover Oregon from the perspective of hunters who just want to hunt as Oregon has a ton of over the counter potential for bow archery elk and deer.
Today’s Tag Tuesday is also brought to you by the goWild App. If you are tired of all the drama on other social media sites, download the goWild App. It’s everything you love about hunting fishing and the great outdoors without the drama. Not only is it now available for Droid and iPhone but goWild just launched the ability to follow people and Direct message from within the App as well. GoWild also has a ton of giveaways constantly going on with some really cool gear.  I am super pumped that the app is taking off and so many of you are enjoying it.

EP 192: State of the Union and Looking Forward to 2018

December 19, 2017 by Cody Rich

A little bit of a State of the Union so to speak. For those who just recently started listening, I wanna say welcome to the show. This past year has been a whirlwind and I know there are a ton of new listeners. I have to admit, back when I started this whole little podcast thing, it stemmed from the selfish desire to ask questions and learn more from those ahead of me. I was so bored of the 500-word magazine articles that merely toted the “five tips to killing the bull of a lifetime”. Even the hunting books that only covered a general outline and the basics of hunting were a snooze. I had been listening to podcasts for years about all kinds of random topics and loved how much the platform allowed you to nerd out on a specific topic. Somewhere along the way, in my desire to learn more, ask better questions, and hear great hunting stories, I realized that there are a lot of people in my shoes as well. I am not the best hunter by any stretch of the imagination, nor do I seek fame in any sense of the word. To be honest, I despise it, because ego is the enemy, but if my journey to be a little better and push myself a little harder every year motivates you to get after it as well, then awesome. I can’t tell you how awesome it is to get success photos and messages thanking the podcast for their success. If one of the byproducts of me getting excited about September is motivating others to get after it, that’s great!
Last year, in an attempt to just be able to do an elk podcast every week, we launched a little thing called Wapiti Wednesday. At the time, it was intended to be a shorter 20-30 minute show on elk hunting, but when the first 2-3 episodes went well over an hour, I knew there was no way to cut Wapiti Wednesday down to a short conversation nor was there a need to. In fact, the Elk Nut episode went nearly 3 hours and I can’t tell you how many people told me they listened to that episode multiple times. Then, with a quality Mule Deer tag in my pocket, I figured I better learn as much as I can about that, so we launched Muley Monday as well. Now I like to give a little grief to all my buddies, telling them that chasing elk is much better than the chasing stinky jackrabbits with horns on their heads, but chasing mule deer is definitely growing on me. Now that I live in a state with killer mule deer hunting and terrible blacktail hunting, I may spend a little more time chasing sticky mule deer bucks. If only for the fact that I need redemption and love the new challenge.
I have been getting pounded with questions about when Wapiti Wednesday and Muley Monday are coming back. To say that they were a huge hit is quite the understatement. I can’t thank you all enough for tuning in every week. My original plan was to run Wapiti Wednesday and Muley Monday from June to October, however, if the death threats to bring you more don’t stop, we may have to bump those up to may. Your guys’ support has been amazing and I can’t thank you enough. 2018 is no different and we plan to bring you a lot more. Muley Monday will be back, Wapiti Wednesday will be back, and we’re adding a Tag Tuesday from time to time though probably not every Tuesday for draw season. We will also still be here every Thursday for more great interviews with an even wider spectrum of personalities, and yes, more of The Walt and Dave Show. Again I can’t thank you guys and gals enough for the support and I hope to keep this show a good mix of whatever I find interesting albeit sometimes random, and more of what you guys want to hear, including doing some live podcasts.
That being said, our first live podcast is scheduled for January 6th in Longview, Washington at the Columbia Theatre. I’m pretty pumped for this actually. The Born and Raised Outdoors crew and the Phelps Game calls guys are all really, really good dudes and good friends, and what better way to do your first live podcast than to get your elk hunting buddies together and shoot the shit. The Land of the Free project that they have been doing is amazing and I couldn’t be happier for their success. You won’t find many people who will outwork those guys and they have been working toward this success for a long damn time. For the live podcast will do a podcast with the whole crew, and then do Q&A segment, as well as a meet and greet. I think it is almost sold out, so if you want tickets better hurry. So long as this isn’t a complete failure, then I would imagine we’ll be doing more of these in 2018.
I also have a big announcement that I have been working on for the last couple of months and would love your input on.
It all started as a hair-brained idea last summer, and if you know me, my brain produces those about every three to five seconds. So, like most hair-brained ideas I didn’t give it much further thought. This little gem though kept popping back into my head over and over, and initially, I put it off because honestly, I just did not have the time to stack another thing on my plate. However, like any good idea does, it persisted. Now, over the years I have come to learn to not just dive into something right away (pun totally intended) but to wait until the excitement wears off. If it still seems like a good idea, then maybe it is worth pursuing. So, over the course of hunting season, I kicked around the idea even more and talked it over with hunting buddies

The concept actually stems from my own personal needs. I was sitting there one day and thought, “I wish there was one of those subscription boxes that would send me all the bars and meals that I use for hunting.” For one, I feel like there are a ton of companies constantly popping up producing cool new products, and I would love to try them all, whether it be Off Grid Food Company, Dark Timber Coffee, Heather’s Choice, Humble Foods, Green Belly or Big Sur bars, there are so many options and they all take time to track down and order. Personally, I find myself not getting around to ordering very often if at all. Half the time, I fill the shopping cart at Walmart on the way to camp or at best, the night before, which ultimately costs me an arm and a leg just to live in the woods for a weekend. So the more I thought about it, the more the idea intrigued me. As far as hunting goes, my gear is pretty dialed. I know what works and what I can live without, but the food is the one thing I’m always going through, and it’s also something that is vastly improving and the industry is growing every year. As we become more conscious of where our nutrition comes from, it only makes sense that we are looking for the best fuel for our bodies while we do so.
Enter Backcountry Fuel Box, a monthly subscription box that will send you all the bars, blocks, snacks, mixes, and meals to your door. It will be the ultimate way to not only save on the supplies you use anyway, but also to try out a wide variety of high-quality options, while not having to think about it or spend the time finding and ordering new products. Each month for $29 bucks you will receive $40-$50 dollars of food you will actually use. Everything in the box will be hand-picked items that will work great as backcountry fuel. Like I said, this idea stems from both my own needs and what I’ve found from the podcast that is lacking. Before I actually kick it off though, I really want your opinions. Is this something that you guys, the listeners, would actually want? I mean, I may think it’s a great idea, but if I’m the only one then it doesn’t much matter. I am hoping to launch the first box in March and would love to hear your thoughts and input. Just drop your info in at Backcountry Fuel Box.com and be sure to leave some feedback in the comments section. I will say that there will be a number of free boxes given away to early supporters. Honestly, I’m somewhat hesitant to do much of a giveaway to start out, because I want your honest feedback and not just a bunch of people signing up for free stuff. However, I am hoping that the decision to launch or not launch is very clear based on feedback, so please let me know what you think. Again that is Backcountry Fuel Box.com and I will put a link in the show notes.
Thank you all for your support of the podcast and here’s looking forward to an even better 2018.

EP 191: Alaska the Last Frontier with Trail Keitzer

December 14, 2017 by Cody Rich

Hey everybody, welcome to the show. On today’s episode, I bring on the behind the scenes guy down there at GoHunt, Mr. Trail Keitzer. Trail might be one of the only people who can give Brady Miller a run for his money when it comes to being a gear freak. Trail is in charge of picking out and testing a lot of the gear that goes onto the gear shop page

. So in this episode, we definitely dive into some gear questions, but I mainly brought him on so we could talk about some of his Kodiak Island Sitka blacktail hunts. With Alaskan draw tags due in December, I figure it would be smart to have someone with a bit more knowledge than myself join me on the show, so we could discuss some of the things that make Alaska different than the rest of the states when it comes to draws. Trail gives lots of information on different ways to travel, how to pack, what to expect as far as delays, and tons more that anyone who’s wanting to do an AK trip will definitely want to hear. Thanks guys for listening!

This episode is brought to you by On X Hunt. I recently harvested a great bull in Montana and I owe a huge part of that to my OnX. This was an area that I had hunted years ago but because of On X Hunt I was actually able to find a new access point to get into the area from a new way and save myself a lot of miles. For that hunt, I actually spent a ton of time on my laptop scouting areas and marking locations which is super cool because then when I get out in the field all of those points of interest I marked on my computer are now right there on my phone. It all worked out really well and I ended up finding a really cool bull and was lucky enough to harvest him. Another really cool new feature of the OnX hunt app is that after I shot the bull I was able to share that location with my buddy Butch who was coming in to help me pack out. which made it super convenient for him to know exactly where to find me. On X Hunt is hands down my best hunting tool I have for under $100 dollars and highly recommend getting it. Check it out and use The Rich Outdoors promo code TRO to save %20 off your membership. On X Hunt know where you stand.

This episode is brought to you by GoHunt.com Now is the time to start planning and start scheming what hunts and where you are going to go this upcoming season and goHUNT in my favorite tool for the job. I will spend hours and hours on goHUNT.com in the next couple months because planning in the offseason is one of the biggest keys to success during the season. GoHUNT is continuously adding new features and adding so much value for its members that blows me away. The new Gear shop is the best place to research and buys any gear your in need of. Not only does the team at goHUNT hand pick and test everything in the gear shop, but because they are a membership-based company they offer the best prices on items, on top of points back to buy even more gear. Every Item in the goHUNT Gear Shop is gear that is actually useable legit gear. They don’t carry anything unless they would use it and trust it themselves. On top of all the membership benefits you get, and all the that are being added in the months to come, goHUNT does giveaways every month. That means every month just for being a member you have a chance to win some really cool prizes. Last month alone goHUNT gave away 5 Browing x Bolt long range rifles. That’s a huge giveaway!
