As a lot of you probably know I just got back from an awesome week of bear hunting. Over all it was an epic adventure with quite the group of people. The original plan was to float the Grande Ronde River with my girlfriend and my sister, mainly for the adventure, and if we see a bear it would be a bonus. It just so happened that Kody Kellom and Trent Fisher of Born and Raised Outdoors were planning the same hunt roughly the same time. On top of that Calvin Halladay, his wife, and their group were floating the river as well about the same time. Of course Mr. James Nash river guide and american badass, had to float down and say hi while we were there. Needless to say we had a great couple of nights on the river camping with good friends. Luckily I threw in the podcast equipment and on the last night we sat down around the camp fire with Trent, Kody, Kelsey, Carly and myself and recorded what I think is a great podcast with the Born and Raised boys.
Unfortunately in the three days on the river we did not see a single bear. So I decided that was enough site seeing and it was time to head to the old stomping ground. The first day back into my usual area and we spotted a beautiful blonde, not the biggest bear but the color phase was too great to pass up. We worked in and had to drop about 1500 feet down to the bear. The girls and I made a great stalk and were set up at 225 yards with both cameras rolling and me behind the old sharps. I dialed in the vernier sight and thought I was golden. I missed high and still have no idea what went wrong because afterward I shot my gun and was dead on out to 400. The girls had to take off after that but my hunting buddy Stewart and his little brother were arriving late Friday night. Friday I spotted a bear and decided I would pass and see if that blonde would turn back up. Stuart arrived late Friday night and I showed him the pictures of the bear from the day before. Needless to say not long after daylight we were glassing that bear up and making the 1,500 foot decent to get into position. Everything went according to plan and we had that bear on the ground by 8 a.m. We made quick work of him and were back to the top by 1 p.m. That evening we were still in search of the the blonde that got away when about an hour before dark we spotted a monster bear in the bottom, on the other side of the canyon. Wasting no time we dropped Stewarts little brother off with a quick tutorial on hand signals of higher, lower, left, and right. We boogied around the canyon to a middle figure that would drop us in about 150-200 yards from where the bear was. Upon getting into position and glassing up to see Phillip, the best we could figure was that he was attempting to land a 747 on top of the hill and had forgot to be looking for the bear. We franticly looked for the big bore only to turn up a small light brown sow that was in the same area we thought that bore was. From our new perspective everything looked a lot different and we couldn’t quite see what we could from across the canyon. About then the big bore appeared almost to the top and moving away from us. I made the split decision to forgo getting a bear with the Sharps and told Stewart to hand me his gun because I wasn’t gonna let that big bore get away. All in all it was a long day but an awesome day that I’m sure I won’t soon forget. Since we were tagged out we actually called a friend who’s kid had a tag and had them come out and hunt with us which was a blast. Derrick and Brandon ended up sealing the deal on their own without our help Monday morning. A successful 2017 bear season with everyone tagged out. I should note that after the podcast Kody was able find some bears but ended up missing with Treaver’s fancy rifle. All in all I had a blast with everyone down on the river and hanging out around the camp fire. Hope you guys enjoy the conversation and be sure to stick through to find the giveaway. Kody and I will pick the best comment and draw a winner next Thursday.
